Men, Gender and Masculinity in an HIV / Aids Context

What the programme seeks to achieve:

To mobilise and support men in leadership roles to debate and influence other men to change their behaviour and attitudes to transform and make a difference in reducing the impact of HIV/AIDS.

Issues addressed in this programme:

Awareness workshops

Development of a training manual on gender

Training on home based care

Production of IsiZulu and English flyers to market the programme,

Practical engagement of men in care giving to children v Development of a theology of a caring community.

Impact:

More and more men are interested in this initiative. Traditional leaders have been indicated their willingness to engage with us on the gender issue. The church leaders involved in the initiative are very keen to see transformation in the church and are taking this to their synods for further discussions. The process of integrating the men and gender  with the Goelama and the Family Health International work has helped us coordinate and manage our work on HIV and Aids better.

Economic Empowerment Programme

Rural and peri-urban communities in KwaZulu-Natal are amongst the most marginalised and impoverished people in South Africa. This is worsened by the lack of information about where and how to access resources and support for their own development. People are often trapped in situations where they are not able to improve themselves or to make interventions that could ensure sustainable transformation in their lives. KZNCC developed a database of economic empowerment initiatives operating in KwaZulu-Natal. Through the Covenant and Land Programme between German Churches and communities in South Africa we support the rehabilitation and development of displaced communities in Thukela Mzinyathi area.

Lobbying and Advocacy Programme

By Churches Provincial Advocacy Office (CPAO)

The advocacy office of the KwaZulu-Natal Christian Council (KZNCC) is a platform of constructive and critical engagement with the provincial legislature of KwaZulu-Natal government. This advocacy office is put in place with the purpose of ensuring delivery of basic social services to communities of the poor and marginalised. As required by the imperative for participatory democracy this advocacy office of KZNCC is established to exercise a prophetic ministry with the poor. The contribution of the ecumenical movement in the democratisation and transformation of our society takes the form of animation and incarnation of the context of the marginalised. The ecumenical movement advocates towards equality and protection of all before the law, and the quest for a non-racist, and non-sexist society,

Healing of Memories and Reconciliation Programme

BACKGROUND

During the 1980s and 1990s, KwaZulu-Natal was more affected by political and criminal violence than any other province in South Africa. The pain and trauma accumulated by this violence has been aggravated by the HIV and AIDS pandemic and by gender violence which are rife in this province. Many people who could make a significant contribution to political and economic development will continue to be paralysed unless they can overcome this ‘multiple woundedness’ and their true potential can be unlocked. The KwaZulu-Natal Christian Council and nine partner organisations have formed a consortium to reach out to the affected groups and individuals and provide a rich diversity of interventions including healing of memories sessions, giving communities skills to deal with pain and trauma, providing individual and community counselling, sharing personal experiences, and other activities. The aim is to help individuals and groups to work through their own personal history and develop attitudes and actions that support a just, equitable and healed society.

The KwaZulu-Natal Church AIDS Network (KZNCAN) was initiated in 2004 by the KwaZulu-Natal Christian Council (KZNCC) and the KwaZulu-Natal Church Leaders Group (KZNCLG) to coordinate the Churches’ and Faith Groups’ HIV and AIDS related activities in the provinces KwaZulu-Natal.

KZNCAN's intention is that church activities become more effective, efficient and sustainable as a result of greater coordination, better networking, strengthened communication and improved mechanism of working together building on each other experience and success.
